Kelowna Gardens

Blog by | July 4th, 2007

Attention green thumbs! You’ll feel right at home in Kelowna. Gardening is somewhat of a cultural phenomenon in this community. It has iconic status and the international accolades to prove it.

For several years, Kelowna has consistently garnered international acclaim for its outdoor beauty. In 1998, Kelowna won the Communities in Bloom competition, and in 2000 took home a first-place finish at the Communities in Bloom International Challenge team competition in partnership with the city of Solihull, England. In December of 2001, Kelowna participated in the Nations in Bloom worldwide competition, held in Shenzhen, China, where Kelowna was the gold medalist and placed second in our population category.

There are several magnificent public gardens to choose from and customized private garden tours are now gaining popularity with the group tour market. Every year in June the city’s most spectacular private gardens become the focus of attention during the Annual Garden Tour. Curious gardeners and those in search of horticultural inspiration make their trek around the city to selected homes.

All summer long, visitors can learn about the produce and flora of this fertile region at a variety of public gardens and orchards. Find out about orchard tours of a 100 year-old orchard, well equipped for visitors with its own country store and restaurant. Discover over 60 varieties of lavender at a local lavender farm; or learn about indigenous plants to this low precipitation area at a number of gardens specializing in xeriscape gardening. Looking for space to ponder life? Find peace in the symmetry of some of the city’s formal gardens including a Japanese garden and a number of elegant English gardens.
