Olympic Accommodations

  • Currently Whistler has 2,254 hotel rooms. The target numbers required for the Olympics is currently 2,500 to 3,000 rooms, plus temporary media accommodations. The rest of the accommodations will be in Vancouver and the surrounding area.
  • Whistler currently has 16 contracts in place for properties for a total of 2,254 rooms, including properties in Squamish. Whistler is also looking into secruing properties in Mt. Currie and Pemberton as well. It is a slower process to obtain in Whistler, due to some of hte hotel properties being strata properties.
  • The Vancovuer Olympic Organizing Committee is about 90% complete in securing rooms in the Vancouver area.
  • The rooms are for the International Olympic Committe, International Paralympic Committee, worldwide Olympics partners (Coca Cola, GE, McDonald's, VISA,Omega and Atos Origin), with seven more sponsors to come.
  • National Olympic partners include Bell, HBC, RBC, GM, Petro Canada,RONA, BCLC, Royan Canadian Mint, Workopolis and Haworth.
  • In June of 2007 an accommodation program will be available for the rental of private residences. A comprehensive package will be put together and will be available at that time.   • The anticipated hotel requirements for Olympic related business beginning 2006 through March 2010 is 500,000 room nights. 300,000 will be during the games themselves. There will be a lot of pre-games business in Whistler and test events/trials for sports. There are approximately 250 visits planned for various Olympic committees.
  • The world is watching. The Sponsors Hospitality Program will have a potential exposure of 12,000 to 16,000 top corporate VIPs. There will be an estimated $6 billion worth of advertising. 42,000 hours on 6 networks, averaging 20 hours a day, drawing 2 billion viewers from 120 countries.
  • One festival, two games, 27 days of sport and 60 days of celebration.
